What “lossless PNG” actually means
PNG compression does not intentionally discard image data when saving the PNG file. But converting a HEIC photo to PNG cannot recreate detail that was already missing from the source.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?+
PNG is widely supported and uses lossless compression for the PNG file itself. It can be useful when you want a familiar image format for editing, screenshots, graphics or workflows where JPEG-style compression is not preferred.
Is converting HEIC to PNG completely lossless?+
PNG encoding is lossless, but converting a HEIC photo to PNG cannot restore image information that may already have been discarded when the original HEIC was created. The PNG file will not add further JPEG-style compression.
Will PNG files be larger than JPG files?+
Often, yes. PNG uses lossless compression, while JPG can make photo files much smaller by using lossy compression. For ordinary photographs, JPG is often the smaller option.
Should I convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?+
Choose PNG when lossless PNG compression or an editing-friendly image file matters more than file size. Choose JPG when you want smaller files and broad compatibility for everyday photos, uploads and sharing.
Does PNG support transparency?+
Yes. The PNG format supports transparency. Converting a normal HEIC photo to PNG does not automatically create a transparent background, but PNG can store transparency when the source image contains it and the conversion workflow preserves it.
Can I just rename a HEIC file to .png?+
No. Renaming the extension does not change the image format. The HEIC image data must be decoded and converted before the file becomes a real PNG image.
